In June of 1991 a small group from Virginia Mennonite Conference went to Tirana and then to Lezhe, Albania to join an international group to help plant a new church movement in a country being freed from over 50 years of communist oppression. The seeds of the Gospel were planted and among those transformed emerged one couple, Dini and Klementina Shahini, who had been planting their own Gospel seeds. They were the first members to be baptized, the first home group leaders and the first national church planters in one of three churches planted in their city. After several years in the United States, they are sensing a call to move back to their country to plant new seeds to reach their own people and help them to discover the transforming power that they themselves discovered.
An Albanian proverb “Weeps the field because it does not get any seeds” gives pause for reflection. You can help plant seeds in the springtime of the lives of Albanian children and youth. You can transform lives by investing in Christian education so “fields weep no more.” Albania is now open to starting Christian schools and we appeal to you to help us launch Albanian Christian School in Lezhe, Albania.
Albanian Christian School envisions a school of academic excellence with a Biblical world view that provides quality educational opportunities for children and youth enabling them to reach their potential as persons who value learning, provide service to others, and serve as leaders within their communities.
It is time for planting seeds! An invitation has come from none other than Prime Minister Berisha, Minister of Education Pollo, Senator Zogaj, school, community, and church leaders of Lezhe to ‘plant’ a Christian school.
It is time for planting seeds! Klementina and Dini Shahini, Albanians who found new life in their Christian faith, fled Albania during the political turmoil of 1999. Now living and teaching in the U.S., they wish to return to their home in Lezhe to provide leadership for the Albanian Christian School. Their years of experience in education and personal friendship and acquaintance with the people of their home community, their passion for Christian education, equip them especially well to lead and administer this new venture.
The Albanian Christian School is a nonprofit, educational organization that exists to transmit the vision of a Biblical worldview and service into meaningful life experiences of the students who attend. In cooperation with local Christian churches, the school seeks to build strong connections between families, church, and school. The curriculum supports rigorous academics in both English and Albanian, spiritual growth and understanding of the Scriptures, emotional and physical health resulting in the development of strong leadership skills for the future of Albania.
You can help plant seeds with your financial assistance and prayers. The Albanian Christian School Vision Support Team and the Menonit Arsimor Shqiptar Foundation (MASF) seek to raise $250,000 by June 2009 so that school doors can open by August 2010, under the leadership of Klementina Shahini and the directorship of the MASF.
In the first year the school seeks to enroll students in grades 9 & 10 with the goal of adding grades 11 & 12 in subsequent years. A suitable site for the school will be located in or near Lezhe, a city of approximately 50,000. This location provides adequate infrastructure, church and community support, and an economy conducive to beginning a new school. The school is expected to be self-supporting within five years of operation.
Will you help us plant seeds so that the next generation of young people in Albania will produce a harvest of Christian values that will serve them and Albanian society well for years to come? We invite you to participate in this worthy and urgent goal. This school will help students and members of the community to form a Biblical worldview and plant seeds in the hearts of young leaders who will be tomorrow’s church leaders, political leaders, educational leaders, marketplace leaders and see Albania experience the future of Klementina’s dreams. Now, is the time for us to work together for this nation that has suffered so much in the past but wants to rise from the suffering to take her place along side of other nations to make a great contribution to our generation and to bring glory to the most High God! Will you join us at such a time as this?
